Church of St. John the Evangelist

The history is varied, but it could be said that St. John’s was formed as early as 1884 when funds were raised to convert the old Union Schoolhouse in Duxbury into a church for the growing congregation of St. John the Evangelist parish. On April 14, 1887, male communicants of the parish voted to organize officially as a mission of the diocese, and the next year, 1888, the women’s auxiliary of the parish founded the St. John’s Guild, which has been engaged in ministry in the parish and beyond since then and is still active today. In 1895, Lucy Sprague Sampson gave the (much larger) current church building to the parish. Built in 1823, this church is the oldest public building in Duxbury.
No matter the date chosen, it is clear that the people of this parish have striven to worship God, to proclaim the Good News of God in Christ, to serve Christ in all persons, and to grow in discipleship for a very long time in this community. Today, we continue to honor God as an active, visionary, inclusive congregation. We are committed to ministries of prayer and worship, of lifelong Christian learning, of outreach and justice, and of compassionate care for one another and the world. All are welcome in this house of prayer. No matter where you are in your journey, you are welcome here.
