Canterbury House: University of Michigan

Share a story

Canterbury House is the home of the Christian Left on the University of Michigan campus, but your religion – or lack of it – is not an issue here. We are not about religious indoctrination; we welcome doubt and encourage hard questions. We're engaged with the issues of student indebtedness and economic insecurity. We reject the culture of violence, racism, patriarchy, and homophobia. We invite you to come and find your best friends, your best cause, and your best self.

The atmosphere is relaxed, the worship is informal and accessible, and the teapot is on the stove. During the week we offer an open door, a quiet place, and a listening ear, as well as discussion groups, Bible studies, and social activities. We are committed to engagement with all of creation, so here you will also find social activism on behalf of the poor, the marginalized, and the oppressed.

Concerts

Arts & Culture

In the mid-1960s and early 1970s, the Concert Series featured now-legendary performers such as Buddy Guy, Janis Joplin, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Richie Havens, Odetta, Gordon Lightfoot, and the MC5. More recently, the Series has featured regional acts, student and faculty ensembles, and internationally known artists drawing from jazz, folk, contemporary classical, electronic music, and improvised music traditions. Artists such as Pauline Olveros, Steve Swell, Henry Grimes, Billy Bang, Oliver Lake, Faruq Z. Bey and Peter Kowald represent a small sample of the outstanding musicians recently hosted at Canterbury House.
