St Stephen's Episcopal Church

Share a story

St Stephen's is a friendly place, begun in the late 1950's as a daughter church of Christ Church Cranbrook, for the rapidly-growing residential areas of Troy, Auburn Hills, Rochester Hills and Bloomfield. Worship is never fussy or overly-formal, and kids are always welcome.

We have a large parish hall that many community groups like to use (information about hall rental is found through our website). We are blessed to have a large piece of land for picnics and youth activities; and an outdoor patio for gatherings and when the weather is nice, our Saturday service is held there. We also have a good-sized parking lot, handicap-accessible entryways and restrooms, and classrooms in various sizes.

St. Stephen's is a member of the Oakland Deanery of churches, and our rector currently serves as dean. We enjoy participating in the Troy-area Interfaith Group and the Troy Ecumenical Churches, for shared worship, awareness-raising and community action.

Volunteers from St Stephen's work regularly at Baldwin Center's feeding program (Pontiac); Bound Together after-school program (Pontiac); St John's Food Pantry (Royal Oak). We host Red Cross Blood Drives and have many opportunities for community outreach.

Ministries

Youth Program Rite 13, J2A, YAC

Faith Formation

We have a vibrant ministry for youth and when they reach 6th grade, they begin the Rite 13-J2A cycle of classes.  Rite 13 includes service projects, fun outings, and a celebration of Manhood-Womanhood at age 13. The J2A group gets into more serious discussions about faith, including preparation for Confirmation at about age 16; and includes a major Pilgrimage trip for which the classes host a big fundraiser each year. After confirmation, the kids become Young Adults in Church (YAC) and continue to meet weekly for prayer, discussion and Bible study. The YAC group does a Mission trip as part of their ministry as young adults.

Ken Fuhr, our Director of Christian Formation, oversees this program. We would love to join with other churches in J2A-related activities!

Mission Trips and Partnerships

Members of St Stephen's give hours each month to serve the hungry and homeless in Oakland Co. Our regular commitments include serving lunch at the Baldwin Center in Pontiac, MI; bringing dinner to the kids at Bound Together, an after-school program held at All Saints' Church in Pontiac; and helping clients at the tremendous food pantry located at St. John's Church in Royal Oak, MI.
