About St. Luke's

We are a Christian church in the Episcopal tradition and a community of faithful people, striving to support one another with love, kindness, and compassion.

Our primary gatherings are on Sunday mornings, when we come together to give thanks to God and to learn. It’s a time for our spiritual nurture and an opportunity to grow in relationship with God and one another. When we participate, it opens us up in new ways – surprising and transforming us with God’s abundant grace. From the many blessings we receive, we’re ready to go out into the world for the week ahead, in our various roles and occupations, renewed to serve.

History at a Glance

Worship services began in 1856 in the first school building of Phillipsburg, near South Main and Mercer streets. Within five years, church members had gathered enough funds for a building – the grand sum of $5,500 – and land was donated by the Andover Furnace Company.

Despite a custom of “pew rentals” to build and maintain churches in the 1860s, St. Luke’s opened its doors as a free church, so all in the community could come and worship.

In 1923, as the Hillcrest section of Phillipsburg was attracting home builders and a new high school, leaders of St. Luke’s arranged to purchase a large tract of land on Morris Pike. The parish weathered construction of a second church building, debt, and relocation. A chapel, added in 1935 on what would became a busy traffic island, became the sole building of the church in the late 1940s.

The parish’s current home was dedicated in 1955, as St. Luke’s was celebrating a century of ministry in Phillipsburg. Today, we enjoy a park-like setting, with an outdoor labyrinth, healing garden, children's play area, ample parking, and long-time neighbors.

St. Luke's is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, located at 31 Mulberry St. in Newark, New Jersey 07102. The Diocese of Newark covers most of northern New Jersey. The Anglican Church has been a presence in Newark since 1729.

Sacred Ground Race Dialogue Circles

Racial Reconciliation
Sacred Ground

Sacred Ground is dialogue series on race, grounded in faith. Small groups are invited to walk through chapters of America’s history of race, racism, and whiteness while weaving in threads of family story, economic class, and political and regional identity. The 10-part series is built around a powerful online curriculum of documentary films and readings that focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories.

Sacred Ground is a resource coming out of Becoming Beloved Community, The Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society. This series is especially designed to help white people talk with other white people, while being open to all racial/ethnic groups. Participants are invited to peel away the layers that have contributed to the challenges and divides of the present day – all while grounded in our call to faith, hope and love.
