Church of the Holy Comforter

Share a story

Holy Comforter is a vibrant, active and welcoming faith community that combines its rich history with a reputation for being an incubator and innovator of ministry, a place where important ministries are born and take root in the wider community.

Since its inception in 1903, Holy Comforter has been an active member of the community. We have supported the founding of other area Episcopal parishes, as well as several organizations that provide ongoing service to our city, such as Boy Scout Troop 1 (1917), the Holy Comforter Weekday School (1955), the Charlotte Loaves and Fishes pantry (1975) and La Escuelita Bilingual Preschool (2009). Our parish has fully supported the establishment of two area Episcopal schools: Trinity Episcopal and Palisades Episcopal.

Under the leadership of our clergy, the parishioners of Holy Comforter continue to actively engage in ministry, gather in fellowship, be welcoming to all, and worship in thanksgiving for the abundance of God.

PARISH LIFE COMMITTEE

Advocacy

Our fun-loving Parish Life Committee helps organize social events that take place across our lovely campus all year long. Among the many activities they sponsor are Coffee Hour gatherings Sunday mornings. These relaxed social gatherings give newcomers, visitors and longtime members the chance to get to know each other in a more informal setting. Parish Life also coordinates our parish-wide Pentecost Picnic that celebrates the birthday of our church with a joyous gathering that combines fun, food and fellowship. In the fall, our evening Oyster Roast under the stars in an adult gathering that honors our Holy Comforter tradition of welcoming hospitality.

MUSIC

Arts & Culture

In his letter to the Corinthians, Saint Paul encourages readers to “sing with the spirit, and with the understanding also” (1 Corinthians 14:15). That guiding principle leads the music program at Holy Comforter, which is committed to offering music of great beauty and high quality in weekly worship. The Anglican heritage of worship and music, centuries old yet always enriched by modern influences, is a rich and vital part of congregational life at Holy Comforter. The clergy and musicians in the parish take seriously their role as leaders of communal prayer, speech, singing, and thanksgiving. Dedicated volunteers give of themselves and their time in the parish’s various musical ensembles.

All Sunday services include music: During the program year (September through Trinity Sunday) the 8:00 a.m. Rite II Eucharist is a simpler service that includes organ voluntaries and congregational singing of hymns. The 10:00 a.m. Rite II Eucharist includes sung leadership by the Holy Comforter Choir. Traditional Anglican hymnody, choral music, and instrumental music are hallmarks of this service, and particular emphasis is placed on congregational singing. At the 12:30 p.m. La Misa in Spanish, there is usually music for guitar. Our Holy Comforter Bell Choir, Children’s Choir, Choral Scholars and guest musicians all play key roles in our music program.
