Galilee Ministries of East Charlotte is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, operating on the site of the former St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. The facilities, which include a church building, parish hall, and community garden, are now known as Galilee Center. GMEC was begun through the collaboration of several parishes in and near Charlotte, and is now recognized as "special ministry" of the Diocese. In addition to hosting Christian worship on Sundays, Galilee Ministries (or GMEC) hosts Centering Prayer on Monday evenings, and has invited several non-profit organizations to provide services to those in need on the east side of Charlotte, including refugees and immigrants as well as longer-term community residents. Since its opening in March of 2015, GMEC and its partners have served over 5,000 people with prayer and worship, food assistance, English and Citizenship classes, after-school programs, and other offerings and opportunities for engagement.
GMEC is also expanding its services to include greater outreach to the community including prayer-gathering, interfaith discussions and hosting community educational sessions aimed at empowerment and advocacy for those in need as well as community-building. This is all done in response to Jesus's command to love our neighbors as ourselves, and our understanding that the word "neighbor" includes all those in our communities, especially those in need.
