St. Timothy's Episcopal Church

Share a story

St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church is a community of faithful people striving to live as people of faith. The mission of the Church is to reconcile people to God and each other in Christ. The way in which we live out our mission is through adoration, formation, and transformation.

By adoration we mean the worship of the Triune God in spirit and truth. We worship God with our body, mind, and spirits and seek him in the sacraments – Christ’s gifts to the Church. The core of our adoration is the continual offering of the most Holy Eucharist, commonly called the Mass. Daily prayer and the constant celebration of the Holy Eucharist is the heartbeat and life of St Timothy’s. An average of 335 persons attended one of three celebrations of the Eucharist each Sunday and numerous Prayer Book feasts were observed in solemn fashion during the year.  In 2013, Morning Prayer was added to the Sunday schedule (in addition to Monday through Friday) to bring the number of public opportunities for prayer and worship to 19 each and every week.

By formation we do not mean education, although education is a part of formation. Formation is the shaping of world-views, behaviors, and relationships through engagement with the Biblical story, Traditions of the Church, and fellowship with other people of faith. ormation is more than being educated in Christianity because it involves a complete renewal of who we are – a change of our identity and worldview. We never graduate from being formed in our faith or achieve completion in our growth; rather our formation in Christ is a lifelong journey that affects every area of our life. Instead of being identified by our profession or talents, our lifelong formation in Christ begins to help us first identify ourselves as people of God who happen to work in various professions and process certain skills. Becoming more like Christ is not an overnight change, but we will continue to grow by our active participation in church, receiving the sacraments, studying the Biblical Story, and surrounding ourselves with other Christians to help us on our journey.

By transformation we mean the changed life that emerges when the people of God adore him and are formed by him. This changed life is not content with a broken world or injustice. Those who are being transformed by the grace of Christ live as graceful agents of transformation in our community and world. The transformation takes place in our hearts, but is evidenced in our lives as we actively live out God’s love. This is a transformation that we can feel—as we inwardly wrestle with the best ways to live and love; and it is a transformation that we can see—as we actively engage all of creation to share God’s hope and love. Transformation makes us feel differently, see differently, love differently, and spend our time and energy differently.

St. Timothy’s is unique in that we offer a High Mass every Sunday at 11am. This mass is characterized by ancient ceremonial, liberal use of incense, chant, and movement that emphasizes the mystery of God and the beatific vision of heaven

Overflow Homeless Shelter

Shelter and Housing

God is at work transforming lives at St. Timothy’s! We have been involved in the Winston-Salem Overflow Shelters through City with Dwellings since they opened on December 1, 2013, with the Blessing of Shelters. By February of that year, the two downtown locations at Augsburg Lutheran and First Baptist Church were overflowing with guests, so St. Timothy’s opened a new shelter location in Drake Hall on Friday, February 14. This has been an exciting time for everyone at St.Timothy’s as our parish lives into incarnational ministry with our homeless neighbors as we strive to live out our baptismal covenants through our adoration, formation, and transformation as the Body of Christ.

From December 1 – March 31, our shelter remains open and nightly welcomes women and couples into our warm and safe space. We provide them with a hot meal and care bags of basic necessities (toothbrushes, etc.), a cushy mat, and often times a bagged lunch.

This is incarnational ministry at it’s best–when we care for God’s people all around us. It’s opening our doors and hearts and welcoming in the most unlikely of guests. It is letting down our guard and our expectations and seeing Christ’s love in a new light when we place ourselves “with” people and in places we would not otherwise find ourselves. Incarnational ministry is at its very core relational—seeing the image of God in each and every soul we encounter. We are learning from our homeless guests that when we step out of what we know and embrace all people as children of God worthy of our time and our relationship—we can better grasp the love of Jesus Christ.

The Abraham Project - Episcopal Service Corps

Faith Formation
Mission Trips and Partnerships

The Abraham Project (TAP) is an Episcopal Service Corp (ESC) program that welcomed its first group of young adults in the summer of 2011 and is now in its fourth year of operation. The program places interns at local non-profit agencies where they work part-time; they live in intentional Christian community and participate in the worship and ministry life of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church.

The name of our program is inspired by the scripture in Genesis where God called Abram to leave everything and everyone he knows to follow Him. Abram had to trust God completely through his journey. This journey is so transforming that in the end Abram becomes Abraham. It is our hope that those who make up TAP will, like Abraham, trust in God, in themselves, and in us; we hope that through this experience interns will grow and flourish into who God is calling them to be.

TAP participants live in intentional community with one another in provided housing and share a food allowance. Interns also receive a simple monthly stipend as well as health insurance. Interns arrive in August and begin work in the local agencies soon after their arrival. Time is also dedicated to personal discernment as well as being in communion with the larger congregation at St. Timothy?s Episcopal Church. The TAP year begins in late-August and lasts until mid-June each year.

Community Garden

Creation Care/Community Gardens

St. Timothy’s was awarded a grant in 2013 by the North Carolina Council of Churches to start our community garden! It has been a wonderful inter-generational activity – older members have shared expertise in gardening and helped us plan the plots, the youth group built the raised beds, one of our Abraham Project interns helped us secure the seeds, and the children started the seeds and help harvest. The garden was planted to encourage healthy eating and living in our congregation, to illumine scriptures about planting and harvesting for a better understanding, and to donate and share with our unhoused neighbors in Miller Park.

In 2014, St. Timothy’s developed a strong relationship with Anthony’s Plot, a ministry in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Winston Salem. We now donate our produce to their weekly neighborhood meals and their 5th Street Gatherings, a monthly meal given to the unhoused guests of Winston Salem.

Our garden has grown! We’ve added two more beds, several large pots for tomatoes, and a big bean stand! We also have a Little Free Library and a playground nearby. We are so blessed to have such a big plot of land with 9 hours of sunshine a day. Please come bring a lunch, sit at our picnic tables, and enjoy God’s great creation.

Wednesday Night Formation and Dinner (Intergenerational)

Faith Formation
Meal Programs

If you want to feel the pulse of St. Timothy’s, come on a Wednesday night. On Wednesday nights, we come together as a parish community, all ages and generations, to share a meal together and participate together in various formation (class) offerings. Many members are able to come both on Sundays and Wednesdays, so they immerse themselves in the St. Tim’s community twice a week for extended fellowship and formation. There is something about that extra time here that grows and stretches us as a community, binding us together and teaching us to see the love and light of Christ in each other. We are not a community of like-minded people who are just naturally attracted to each other, but we are given to each other in Jesus and we are called to accept each other as we are. Wednesday Nights give us the best opportunity to live out that call.

There is something for everyone of every age at Wednesday Nights Formation. By coming together regularly midweek, we can focus on being a strong inter-generational community of believers. It allows our focus on Sundays not to be on a “coffee hour,”  but on the corporate adoration of our Triune God.
