Holderness School was founded in 1879 as an Episcopal school, and it remains deeply connected to those roots. At the same time, we seek to be an inclusive school that supports, encourages, and nurtures a variety of religious beliefs and levels of commitment.

Monday mornings and Thursday evenings

Students attend two required chapel services each week. The Monday morning service is a formal celebration in the Episcopal tradition that seeks to cultivate an open and ecumenical sense of community spirituality.
Thursday

The Thursday evening services are dedicated to topics of a broader spiritual, ethical, and moral nature and often feature student, faculty, and guest speakers.

Pro Deo et Genere Humano - “For God and Humankind” - is our school motto, and our commitment to serving others is strong. Forty hours of community service are required for graduation, but students regularly go far beyond that. Throughout their four years at Holderness, students give back through their work on Project Outreach, Vestry, Relay for Life, and many other initiatives.
