Everyday Basics Essentials Pantry
St. Mark's newest ministry is an essentials pantry named "Everyday Basics - bridging the gap to human wellness". We have seen a gap to be filled between our clothing bank and food bank which both operate out of St. Mark's church. That gap is essential.
Our mission is to provide for the basic needs that are vital to the creation and preservation of human dignity, self-esteem, and well-being of people. We will accomplish this through raising peoples’ awareness of the plight of others, becoming a resource for freely distributing necessities essential to daily life and by building a broad community of inclusiveness.
Everyday Basics' grand opening was on September 13th, 2009. The pantry is open to serve the general public from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the first and third Saturdays of each month. We provide basic essentials including (but not limited to) toothpaste, toothbrushes, bar soap, shampoo, dry laundry detergent, toilet paper, feminine products, diapers, and baby wipes.
Financial donations (or donations of any of these products) may be brought to the church office at 209 Eastern Avenue, Augusta during office hours, the Augusta Area Food Bank from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on Mondays, or to Everyday Basics during the operating hours noted above.
Free Public Suppers
Our free monthly public supper is held in the parish hall (or, weather permitting, on the lawn during the summer) on the first Saturday of every month from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Volunteers from Church at 209 (St. Mark's plus Prince of Peace), St. Barnabas and the Unitarian Universalist Church have been coming together to hold these free suppers since January of 2006. The dinner menu varies each month. Previous dinners have included chicken tetrazini, shepherd's pie, stuffed pork roast, and even ribeye roast.
Please join us for one of our suppers. It's an evening of fun, community, and good food. Public suppers are free and donations are graciously accepted.

Prayer Shawls
A brief introduction to Prayer Shawl creation as a Spiritual Practice Because this is a spiritual practice, before one begins the knitting/crocheting process, a blessing, prayer or wish or can be said, dedicating the work of your hands for the needs of the receiver. You may want to light a candle, play soft music to enhance the healing energy for your knitting time, remembering that this is a prayerful process. Often, people choose to work in groups, and then pass the work-in-progress around the circle, so that each person may add some stitches or simply hold it for a while to add their prayers, energy and good wishes.
Materials needed:Size 11 or 13 Knitting needles –OR— Size ‘M’, ‘N’ or ‘P’ crochet hookThe Yarn of your choice (– preferably NOT wool)
Knit: 555 yards of yarn (@ 3 skeins )
Crochet and larger shawls: 740 yards for longer shawls and 60+ stitches
The Original Prayer Shawl Knitting Pattern began by casting on stitches in multiples of three – 54, 57, or 60. For example, if you use size 11 needles and cast on 54 stitches, 3 skeins of slightly bulky yard is enough. Each yarn has its own personality, just as each knitter brings her/his own style to the project.
Helpful hints: If your yarn has a multicolor stripe, be careful when tying on a new skein: make sure the color sequence matches. And, tie on the new skein in the body of the shawl instead of at the end of a row, because it won’t show as much.
Knitting Pattern: v first row: *knit 3, purl 3* v second row: always start the row with the opposite stitch of what you see. So, if the first stitch on the needle is a knit, then start with a purl. Basically: KNIT THE PURLS AND PURL THE KNITS. It should not look like ribbing. Hint: If you cast on 57 stitches you will always start a row with Knit3.
Crochet Pattern:v Chain 54 stitches or desired width of the shawlv Chain 1, turn, single crochet in each of the stitches to the end. Chain 3 and turn.v Double crochet in top of each single crochet. Repeat this row 2 more timesv Chain 1 and do 1 row of single crochet to end. Chain 3 and turn.v Do 3 rows of double crochet. Repeat pattern to full size (1 row single, 3 rows double), ending with 1 row of single. Note: crocheting typically uses more yarn than knitting. To complete the shawl, continue to work until the shawl measures at least 57-58” long. If it feels snuggly and comforting to you, chances are it will be perfect for someone else. Finish the shawl with fringe if you’d like.
